I was just looking at the Riverkids website (which has had an update and minor facelift--go check it out) and, more importantly, the Sixty Good People Campaign. This project was developed by one of us--a fan, a writer, a mom--borne out of her own life experiences.

I know many of you don't have a lot of extra money to throw around, but I also know that many of us throw $25 at coffee, beer, or junk food each month. So consider committing that amount to Riverkids. Or signing into Paypal and sending a few dollars toward the cause. In the site's own words:

The RiverKids Project needs $1500 a month to feed, educate and shelter
children at risk for child trafficking in Cambodia for 2006/7.

Make a difference. Donate.

RiverKids provides community-based care for children and families at risk of child trafficking in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Through food, school and social work support, we keep families together, protect abused children and stop trafficking before lives are destroyed.

RiverKids is a low-cost and local project where 100% of funds go to the project. Fundraising costs are covered by volunteers, and all financial records are published online.

Oh bejeebus, I'll admit I've had a beer tonight, but I just laughed myself to tears at the commentary in this post about the new presidential dollar coins. Largely because of the pictures, which are truly appalling. But fuck me, the commentary is wonderful!

Gacked from metaquotes, if I recall correctly...

ETA: Um, forgot the link earlier. Should work now. Also, changed the date to show up again today. Sorry 'bout that. *grin*

Okay, this is very weird. My friends list goes from today to 2/5, with no posts in between. This got me thinking that perhaps all of my friends had finally gotten sick of me never posting and had taken me off posting filters all at once, so I started checking LJs and...you people are posting. I see that you are.

Weird LJ.

Whee, got home from the ice dancing finals at the nationals about an hour ago. So, so, so fun!! And a really decent field, I thought. And I met one of the skaters on my way back to the car--she and her partner didn't score all that well, but I feel like they're a couple to watch. Very elegant and dramatic. (and, as it turns out, nice!)

Tomorrow is ladies' finals and men's finals. Loooong day. My mom's here for this--we've been waiting for about the last two years, when we hear it would be where I live. In '86 they were in Tacoma--we didn't buy tickets for any events that year, but we attended almost all the practices, which was, in many respects, just as fun!

Now I'm all tucked away in the back bedroom, laptop in hand, cat in lap. Man I love skating. I do not have a skating icon. Perhaps a dancing one instead. One of the men was dressed very much like this, as it happens. They took...silver, maybe? Bronze? Also, there were pewter medals. Pewter? Have they always had pewter? It was very confusing.

and she returns...with a meme

it's a *phobia*

This would be the place to stop reading if you're vegan. Or buddhist. Or just an all-around cooler person than I am.

Noticed my cat sitting upright behind me, very attentive to something on the way, so I crane my head back to see what it is and I see this (well, not this specific one. this is the picture I found when trying to determine what horrible fucking thing was on my wall)

So although I love snakes, love rats, and am not scared to walk around at midnight downtown, I just spent 20 minutes staring at this thing with a shoe in my hand, shaking and whooping for breath. Is this stupid? Yes, yes it is. Can I help it? Maybe not so much.

Finally killed it (sorry, but I did. I smashed it. Even though they're apparently helpful and eat roaches. Which I also hope to god I don't have) Smashed it clean away. After working myself up to the point where I promised myself if I hit it with the shoe, I'd keep the shoe there and not drop it, squealing, which is normally what happens because I panic.

And then I burst into tears and shook for ten minutes.

So yeah, that was tedious. And it makes me feel stupid.

Also, my cat is now sleeping. Mighty damned hunter, that one!

Just for the record, I'd pretty much be fine if these stayed outside for, like, my whole life from now on. Yes

C'mon, you know you want to help me out!

What Supernatural should I watch tonight? Rec me one or two? You can even tell me why, if you want. I'm in the mood to watch but apparently not in the mood to actually...choose.

So my grandmother, who is a very small person, maybe five feet tall, wants a lap blanket. A few days ago, I cast on without swatching, as is my wont. Lions Brand homespun on huge circulars-- I couldn't really tell how wide it was going to be until I had gotten about seven inches in length.

Last night I was able to measure it and I swear the damned thing was almost nine feet across. Nine feet! This might just be a little excessive for my grandmother. And for a lap blanket.

Frogged it, re-wound the yarn, and cast on using 75 stitches this time. It seems much more reasonable.

Seriously, why do I never knit a test swatch?

ahahaha!

iTunes 7 is out, and it looks great. It also shared two facts with me that I could have lived without knowing: NellyFurtado is apparently a promiscuous girl, and not only was sexymissing, but it's been left to Justin Timberlake to bring it back. Great.

Peter Jackson acquires the rights to Naomi Novik's Temeraire series. And how damned cool is that?

ETA: Um, I would like to say for the record that I'm not quite as grammatically challenged as the many typos in my original post would seem to imply...

I was having a really shitty night. Horrid coworker on top of other family stress and I guess it just all hit me tonight. So instead of staying at home and wallowing I decided to go to the coffee shop again, eat dinner (at 9:30 at night--oops), have a big ass glass of merlot, and study for my Psych 101 CLEP, which I've been avoiding. In addition, I emailed my coworkers to let them know I wasn' t feeling well and might need to take the day off tomorrow. (I'm not feeling well. They don't need to know it's a depression thing--I find that people understand physical maladies much better than psychological or emotional, so...)

Anyway, the barista boy just made me the Best Mocha in the Whole World. It's just *perfect*. Rich and hot and the chocolate is richer than sweet and I'm so happy right now. Even with a hundred 15 year old emo fucks around me. Hah!

I've taken to hanging out at a local coffee shop with free wireless. It's cleaner than my house, fewer distractions (at least the kind that matter to me), and they bring me food and drink! What could be better?

At any rate, they have an attached room for concerts and recently they've taken on the overflow shows for a local venue that's had to close, so there have been shows almost every night. Most of the time it's nothing I like--billions of emo kids annoying the crap out of me (and only marginally pretty. And not terribly smart) and lots of...noise. I'm sure it's perfectly good, but I don't like it.

Last night I was here and turned off my headphones long enough to hear the last band to play and they were *fantastic*. Good music, melodic, eclectic, good energetic performance, and cute cute! I have the CD--just seven songs. I'm sure they'll be recording something else before long. So now I'm pimping. I'm really quite fond of them.

Kid Theodore. They're from Salt Lake City, I think, and they're on tour right now--maybe they're coming to where you are, in which case I'd recommend checking them out.

The site streams all the songs from the CD, so you can get a taste. I'll be uploading the songs to my server this week in case anyone wants to download--they said they didn't mind. Or you could give a struggling new band a few bucks and buy the CD from their site.

So yeah, that's my pimp. Enjoy. *grin*

Justin's video for SexyBack

Didn't like the song at all when I listened to it, but I'm really enjoying this. Little bastard writes catchy songs.
